Firefox and Camino on Mac OS X - cannot use Myspace, Gmail, ebay etc.

February 29, 2008 5:27 pm

I’m hoping if anyone has the same problem and finds this post, that they know of a fix. This has me stumped - I have Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2, and was happily running Firefox 2.0.0.12 Suddenly, I was getting error 611 trying to send a gmail. So I tried to post to the gmail forums - it said an error has occured. So, I tried to login to Myspace, it said “length required”. Then I tried to post an item on ebay - it said there was an error. Safari worked fine on all those sites, but there’s no way I wanted to switch to THAT wreck of a browser! So, I cleared cache, cookies, disabled toolbars, ran CLAMxAV - everything I could think of. I also downloaded Firefox 3. Still the same. To prove the point to myself, I downloaded Opera, and all the sites worked fine.

But then, I downloaded Camino and Flock, and it was exactly the same errors as I was getting with Firefox.

What the…?!? It seems like any Gecko based web browser cannot do anything that involves a certain type of POST function - and yet, it gets weirder. I can log IN to gmail and ebay, but not post anything. But I cannot login to Myspace it says “length required” and the mozillazine forums is as if the name and password boxes were empty. What can I do?! I’ve also totally deleted the whole Firefox profile, scanned the drive for permission problems and errors etc.

Note: This story is starting to get some interest - see also Apple Support, Mozillazine, Google Groups and the Flock posts on this subject. Please also Digg it! (See below)

UPDATE! Thanks to the genius work of user swingsetpark in the Mozillazine forums, this has now been resolved.

Network rail fined - director gets knighted plus bonuses

February 28, 2008 10:14 am

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/news/2008/02/network_rails_record_fine.html

What’s the point of fining Network Rail a record £14m for its “monumental foul-up” on the west coast main line over New Year?

The official justification from the Office of the Rail Regulator is that the fine marks the seriousness of disruption caused by Network Rail’s overrun on engineering work.

But few can see the point of the penalty.

Fines don’t do any good, says Martin Waller in the Times. He points out that Network Rail was penalised £2.4m for similar failings during Christmas 2006.

And as Network Rail is a government company, fines only amount to shunting money from one bit of the state to another,

Tony Singh - national hero

February 27, 2008 6:29 pm

 From BBC News

A shopkeeper has said he is “relieved” to not face a murder charge after a man who tried to rob him was stabbed to death with his own knife.

Liam Kilroe, of Billinge, Merseyside, was wanted by police when he was killed in Skelmersdale on 17 February.

Police believe he was trying to rob Tony Singh, who owns the Lifestyle Express shop in Birleywood, Lancashire.

The CPS has decided not to prosecute Mr Singh. The shopkeeper says he does not know how Kilroe’s injury was caused.

I only just heard about this case - this guy needs a medal. I’m amazed the case went his way - there have been so many nuts decisions lately, like in the Tony Martin case, that it’s nice to see justice finally prevailing.

One simple rule: do not use http://www.unlockcentral.co.uk/ - they are scammers.

Consider yourself warned!

Myspace scam phishing warnings

10:59 pm

I’ve seen a huge proliferation of the following two scams on my Myspace page. The first involves the sentence:

“hey have you seen this blog that it was about you? its bad stuff, click on the link to check it out “

or

“you gotta see this diana’s profile, its sad to hear what happened to her..well im not going to go into details but you just gotta see her profile”

and a link to a myspace login site (which is a phishing page)

The second involves the sentence:

hey my frienVd Em3ily saw your prof5ile and thinks youre hodt, she walnts you to cojntact her on msxn mesusenger at emily20bath@hotmail.com  (or emily23york@hotmail.com ) thankxs she said shes wa9iting

Youtube down - Pakistan hijacks address range, poisons DNS

8:10 pm

It’s not just you - youtube is definitely down!

I did some research - two days ago, Pakistan ordered all its ISPs to block access to Youtube.

Two days later, and the whole world has lost access to Youtube, as noted on Slashdot and the BBC and is being discussed on Wikipedia.

According to Stegonews, this is a malicious action by Pakistan to poison the Youtube DNS range. According to a news announcement on the OpenDNS server:

Youtube.com is down right now because Pakistan Telecom has decided to (accidentally probably) hijack their IP address space which means that nobody in the world can reach Youtube. This isn’t an OpenDNS issue. Just letting you all know.

Accidentally?! I’m not a great conspiracy theorist, but you don’t just poison DNS “accidentally”, two days after the same company cut a whole countries access off to Youtube because of “unislamic material”. I think this has the potential to grow into quite an incident.

But then, as one blog notes ,

it’s just a temporary outage on a goddamn internet site, not the end of the fucking world.

True, but if it turns out to be a deliberate act, then we all need to start worrying.

NOTE: If you still do not have access and can edit your hosts file (and know how to), adding the line
208.65.153.238 www.youtube.com
provides a fix.

Fat Bastard

February 23, 2008 9:44 am

That’s the nicest thing I can think of to call this selfish bastard:

It was a call-out too far for the firefighters of Falkirk. They may rescue cats up trees, but when two fire engines and 10 firefighters were called out to move a 260kg (41st) man in his bed, their patience snapped.

The fire brigade was called four times last week by the helpline NHS24 to help the 40-year-old morbidly obese man just to move around his council flat in Grangemouth. On one call, it took 10 men to lift him two feet.

“The guy was uncomfortable and he asked to be moved across his bed. The crew actually fixed his pillows for him too,” said Gordon McQuade, a local Fire Brigades Union official. “You can see how ludicrous it is. We’ve got no specialist equipment - it was sheer brute force. Being 41 stone can’t be much fun. But it’s not a proper use of resources.”

The problem has become so widespread that many fire brigades have banned their local councils from calling them in unless it is a medical emergency. The FBU’s complaints have forced the local brigade and the NHS to discuss new rules.

Some councils, such as Falkirk, have specialist lifting teams with hoist-equipped vans. But with this case, even their mobile emergency care service was thwarted.

The man in Grangemouth, [Robert Marsden], said: “I don’t know what the fuss is all about. The firemen came here and got on with their job. Sometimes I slide to the floor in my living room, and it’s hard to get back up. I try not to make a habit of ringing for help, but sometimes there is nothing I can do.

Actually, yes there is, you lazy slob. Put down the pie and go for a run. This wretched bag of lard really epitomises everything this country has become lately - selfish, self-centred, lazy.

Cheap Montana Sauvignon Blanc wine until Sun 21st Feb in UK

February 21, 2008 5:00 pm

In the UK? Here’s a way to get one of the world’s tastiest wines, Montana, for £4.43 instead of £7.50 if you do this before Sunday 24th Feb 2008:
Go to http://tesco.com/ and add 9 bottles of Montana Sauvignon Blanc. It’s 3 for 2 at the moment.
It’ll total to £67.32, but with 3 for 2 it’ll be £44.88 making the wine £4.98 - BUT remove a tenner with code XXPD96 then book a £5 delivery slot (or cheaper if you can) leaving the wine priced at £39.88 or £4.43
Compare that with £7.50 or even £7.99 at some places (or £11.99 from corner shop!)
Yes, the XXPD96 code will work, even though the 3 for 2 makes it under £50, because the displayed value is over £50, if that makes sense.
There is also a XX2DD9 1000 extra points deal discussed here which you could use instead:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/145155/code-for-1000-extra-clubcard-points/

Remember to note that the final price including the 3 for 2 offer isn’t shown on the website, but you must check the 3 for 2 offer is actually still on!
