Update: The Register are now covering this story
I just heard about a site called TVCatchup which allows you to record ANYthing available on Freeview, and watch it online later. Read the article in The Guardian about the potential legal issues
I’m deleting my 4od and BBC Iplayer straight away, this is far better and easier! Although about 5 mins after the BBC item about it, it started going very slowly.
Anyway, it appears to be in a legal grey area, so enjoy it while it lasts!
The BBC programme was called You and Yours, broadcast mid-day 7th Feb, and can be listened to again here (after the programme)

I fail to understand what this is going to achieve. Well, actually that’s a lie, I know exactly what is going to happen. What the BBC have done by killing this site is ensure that people will turn to Ares and Limewire instead. If they had an ounce of brainpower they might realise that TV Catchup is actually doing them a great service. The more people that watch a series on TV C the more that know about it therefore the ratings increase. For intelligent experienced people in media these guys sure know how to shoot themselves in the foot. I won’t use Ares or LW but I know a dozen of people already who have it as a backup for when these sites stop working. It makes me laugh that the BBC really expect to pull this site off the net and then release their own player which you have to pay a silly amount for. Please, grow up guys. I don’t support illegal downloading because I myself am a musician, however that said, I can understand why lots of people will flock to use it. There’s a basic rule at work here, when you cut off a supply of free media which was at the time legal, people turn to breaking the law. Why? Because you give them no choice. You ask people who clearly cannot afford it to invest in their own (BBC) highly overpriced services. You have to understand, you can take down one or two people, but you can’t take down the nation.
For those reasons, I do not agree with what you have done, and I for one look forward to seeing it back up and running again shortly….
Dan Freeman
I work for TVC and let me tell you this Mr Freeman. TVC will be back very soon. We’re not finished yet. Just give it some time, then if you know where to look, you will find us again……
This conversation has been recorded and written down. Please take notice, if you try and create a new website or find a serve big enough, you will once again be breaking the law. Your site is not legal and as such cannot be continued. If you are found to have ignored the rules again you shall face prosecution. All ISP’s big enough to support TVC have been contacted and will not upload your site. However, if you manage to create your own, action will be taken.
Well that’s kinda weird - the last three comments were posted within minutes of each other, from the same office, if not PC.
