Video

The videos below were made using Windows MovieMaker, which, while being very easy, is not without its quirks! However, thanks to a dedicated MVP called PapaJohn and his enormous website of everything MM2, I managed to solve all the problems I was having. I've also just discovered http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/ which has an active forum to complement the newsgroup.

The very first one is how I got into movie making. california_websize.wmv (3Mb). I made this when I got back the UK, from some film I shot on my small digital camera (15fps, no sound).
Bearing in mind I've never been shown how to make a movie, I thought I did OK, especially as it took me 15 minutes to learn the software, and 15 minutes to make the movie

The Oblivion ride at Alton Towers, UK (1'22") This is 9Mb big because of the amount of motion involved.I was well proud of this - the music and timing all seemed to work.

Then work picked up, the summer came along, and all went quite, until I went rowing on the Thames with Louise, and then to Bournemoth. Again, crappy camera, silent movie, but the addition of music seemed to make it work:
louise.wmv (5.5Mb) is the result.

Next up - France. (22mb) A disaster! The movie, not France. I bought a "real" miniDV camcorder, and made this next video far too long. I was experimenting with getting different camera angles from one bit of footage. Well, you get an idea of what Concarneau is like, but it's not very "tight".

We then cycled to London ( bicycle.wmv 10Mb) to see the Flugtag ( flugtag.wmv - 2Mb) both of which are so-so, but I still wasn't happy with the timings.

After that, was a trip to Cornwall, during which we saw the Goonhilly Earth Satellite Station and The Eden Project (goonhilly_eden.wmv 11Mb). See if you can full-screen this....I chose the music as I thought it summed up the weirdness of both. And no, that's not my voice at the beginning, just my face sampled into a computery graphicy type thingy.

It was getting better by now...so I made: Bridget Jones and the Tate Gallery! ( tateblaine.wmv ). No, that's not my voice during the first bit of music, which is by DJ Shadow, in case you're wondering.

Having got the hang of it, I thought I'd save the best two 'til last: aus2k.wmv - 100% energy in this one! With this one and the next, the actual video quality is lower as I only had the stills camera which takes 15 seconds of small, silent video, but I think it works quite well.

The one you've been waiting for! nzvid.wmv
Three comments about this one: the rodeo section goes on for too long, the "skydive" segment looks washed out in places because someone else did a DV capture from tape for me, and the cow music at the end? Heard it on a radio station in Dunedin...don't blame me!

And finally, a real quckie, "balloon" (3.2Mb), using static pictures to start with with some short video later changing in time with a good choice of music. This was only a bit of fun when I helped out with a balloon release

If it seems "slow" or you can't see the movie or there's some other problem, then you need to download Media Player 9.
If you have an older PC, or don't want to install the full Media Player 9, go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
and get the download that is appropriate for your machine.
If you want to be REALLY safe and install the least things, this is the thing to do.
