Ban the niqab, says Egypt’s highest Muslim authority

Breaking news:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/8290606.stm

Egypt’s highest Muslim authority has said he will issue a religious edict against the growing trend for full women’s veils, known as the niqab.
Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi, dean of al-Azhar university, called full-face veiling a custom that has nothing to do with the Islamic faith [...] merely a tradition, with no connection to religion or the Koran.

Wow, fantastic news for Womens’ Rights, but this is going to put Guardianistas (Guardianistii?) in a quandary! You see, whenever someone dares to speak up for womens rights, and points out what anyone with the ability to read knows already (that there is nothing in the koran or Islam about the requirement for a full face covering) they get called a racist or some equally daft term – remember the Sarkozy incident?

(You know when someone is ignorant as they don’t appear to know the difference between religion and race!).

I wonder if those same white, middle-class pseudo-liberal clueless handwringing plonkers will be calling Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi a racist?

Anyone care to hazard a guess?

Anyway, for me this is great news, and long overdue.
It’s high time this oppressive, divisive, barbaric and medieval garment found it’s way straight back into the history books along with slavery, where it belongs.

    Hey DT,

I like this article. I dont like the burqa, the sikh kid with his knife at school, the orthodox jews who can carry a militia of knives across the world as part of there job as a chef, and I especially dont like sharia courts.

Who am I, who dont like this nonsense different rules for them and us. I am not a fascist, or a racist, or a member of EDL as misunderstood by most.

I am a British Indian, born in ENGLAND, and I am born in to the Jain religion. I live by the rules of the country I am born and live in. I worship the queen, respect our boys and girls who fight for our safety in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Why have I spoken up. I see black on black knife crime, with all kids being told knives are bad, and no knives in school. but, wait a minute. whats this about the sikh kid who wants to carry his knife because his religion siad so. that is bullshit. a knife is a knife, like a spade is a spade. kill the knife not each other. the sikhs should think of the kids have been killed by a knife instead of there religion.

apart from women should not wear burqa so they dont get skin cancer, they should show there face, because that women could be a man with a bomb.

the jewish chefs with the knife collection. so, anyone who has a beard and looks muslim get arrested, but a collection of knifess can go past the fuzz.

o, and last, but not least, stop these bloody sharia laws, banks, courts and finance. it is seperatism. if they want ethical finance, go to the coop or triodos.

when in britain, live by brit law, or go live in another country, wherte they have less or no freedom than ole blighty.

and yes, if a white guy were to ask for these rules, he would be called a racist. well, i am a brown kid, who is a jain, and i am telling you to stop kissing the arses of extremism and seperatism dressed up in a sheeps clothing.

p.s. all these stupid rules for different religions will cease, when climate change disposes of us, irrespective of whether we wear a knife or a burqa.

if we all remove our skin, our blood and bones are the same. anyone want to front up and call me a racist, go ahead. but lets have a cup of tea for peace first.

    cheers,

    Sagar
