MMR, Bad Science, tall poppies and Gail Trimble

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Britain seems to be having a bout of “Tall Poppy Syndrome“.  You see, we have this bright young thing on University Challenge. She slaughters the competition, and allows herself a smile when she gets the right answer. Except, people hate her. [Daily Mail] [Guardian]

Update: Her team won! The BBC have a Have Your Say about this.

Right now, with schooling and education standards falling even lower according to the Cambridge Review on education, you’d think we’d celebrate success.

But no! We fall even deeper into the mire of conspiracy and superstition. What’s the racist and obnoxious Jade Goodey ever done apart from whore her death around the media? But somehow we (the media would have us believe) respect and celebrate her, as if being a fat foulmouthed media tart is something to aspire to.

If more people were a little more like Trimble and a little less like Goodey, we might have an economy. Or an industry. Or at least enough people with enough sense not to vote Labour back in.

Now, onto MMR: Ben Goldacre’s Bad Science blog keeps track of MMR hoaxes and other media nonsense. However, not everyone likes their work critiqued, especially when they get it so very wrong. In fact, LBC’s lawyers came down on him when he put the following recording of Jenni Barnett talking crap on LBC. She said she welcomed a debate – which she did by closing off the comments and removing the post from her blog. Nice.

Related to this is the BBC’s “Street Science” series on MMR:

And here is a segment on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour about the dangers of not using the MMR vaccine:

There’s a couple of very good books if you want to get a handle on urban legends, bad science and conspiracy nonsense.

Weston Grand Pier fire – MI5 and FBI conspiracy

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

In late July 2008, fire took hold at the heart of Britain’s economy on Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare.

The government would like us to believe it was just a blaze – but are we being told the truth?

Look at this image from the BBC news pictures site:

Let’s look more closely at that caption:

“After a little while I heard what sounded like an explosion. I don’t know if it was an explosion or the noise when the pier collapsed.”

It’s well known that Weston-super-Mare is in the UK. But did you know that MI5 headquarters is in London, and London is also in the UK? With MI5 being just 141 miles away, all the evidence is there of a missile attack. An explosion? What else could it be.

Sifting through the evidence, the fire service say they though it might have been started by chip fat. We found an unemployed bloke on the internet who’s been blogging since his wife left him who says he has evidence that MI5 is colluding with the FBI to provide chip fat fuelled missiles. If it can be done with cars, it’s a logical step for missile fuel.

The timings

From the article

Dozens of firefighters fought to tackle the blaze which took hold of the partly wooden pier in the North Somerset seaside resort at about 0700 BST.

More evidence of BBC cover-ups. The blaze took hold at 0700, but the BBC had it fully written up just 7 hours later – how did they know?

Were the Victorians in on the conspiracy?

The pier was built of metal. Just like the Twin Towers. During construction, someone could have embedded explosives in the legs of the pier.

The pier has never burnt down before.

The pier was built in 1904. The number “one” looks like the letter I. ninE. zeRo. Four = IERF – re-arranged spells FIRE.

If you take the letters of the word PIER and rearrange them, it makes the word PIRE, which is a bit like PYRE, which is a burning pile.

Finally, just like the Titanic, they were both on the sea.

Jon Ronson on… London Tube Bombing conspiracy nutjobs

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

I heard a very interesting programme this evening called Ron Jonson on…. Although the subject matter is heavyweight, there’s only one way to tackle it, and that’s to use humour.
I’ve posted about 9/11 conspiracies before, but I never realised we had our own homegrown tin-foilers.
And these guys are sick.

A spokesman, David Shayler, even had to resort to the R word – yes, racism, used totally inappropriately. Apparently, to accuse anyone except MI5 of being responsible, is racism. Have a listen to the clip here – Jonson gives mentalist Shayler the only response he could do in a situation like that…

The woman featured, Rachel North, has written a blog for the BBC called Coming together as a city

Here’s the entire programme, with the non-relevant middle section about something else snipped out. It’s about 20 minutes long.

Do listen to it all. Scary stuff.
