Glenn,

It wasn't me who recorded this conversation....

I suggest you read the threads properly before flaming people (at least get your facts right), but judging from your piece I guess you are either American or illiterate or both.

The subject matter is about unsolicited auto-dialled sales calls with pre-recorded messages, which are illegal if originated in the UK, in which case the originator and many other people have reason to be annoyed.

Perhaps you work for one of these organisations and cannot defend yourself by fair and logical argument.

howard it is clear u have no job, no freinds, no sex life and most likely no life, it saddens me to think of you all alone at night sitting next to the phone hoping for a call from FSDM (an all round remarkable company) so that you might record it and put it online so people can comment i fear it is your only form of social interaction. the simple fact is if you hadnt been so wittlessly childish in telling the american lady to transfer you because you had debt then telling the agent from FSDM you had some debt they would have stopped calling you. now however they believe that a man named peter is being held captive by a dodgy chinese laundry outfit and is in need of some serious information on an IVA or debt consolidation. more fool you

Many years ago I was taught an old trick which works every time – get hold of a whistle, i.e. referee, police etc, the older ones are best as they are louder / higher pitched – then if you get an abusive person or persistent caller on the other end, just blow it into the receiver – it can actually burst ear-drums. If anyone tries to complain about it (only happened once to me) - just say sorry its electrical feedback on the phone – it cannot be proven and unless they reveal who they are nothing can be done!
Amazingly they don’t call back!!

Two things, being 'ex-directory' means ONLY that.. it does not give any implied right to peace from overseas marketing calls. As for blocking 'their' line, sorry but no - you are only blocking yours. The call initiator actually 'controls' your line from the time the call is answered until they hang up. Because these messages are automated your line is only held for the period it takes to replay it, then the line is released. If you hang up before, some systems detect this and drop the line immediately, going on to the next number in their list.

I would doubt this is a 'scam' in the way you mean it - it is called 'telemarketing' and has been around for years. Because they are calling from abroad, they can select a target area and start calling numbers from 000001 to 999998, calls that don't connect don;t cost anything - the system can also detect answering machines, faxes and modems.

Believe it or not, there is actually a market for these call logs, because they retain a value, as they can sell on those numbers that were actually answered by a human, AND those numbers where the recipient responded.

Nathan,

I am happily and profitably employed with no debts whatsoever.

This thread is for people who are constantly being harrassed by unwanted telephone calls and not about personal debt - so I'm not quite sure of the point of your vitriolic personal attack.

My comments are therefore directed at the originators of these calls and the inability of OFCOM to prevent them.

Perhaps you are too illiterate to read the thread or are you also an employee of these sales organisations with their unethical methods ?

Further to my previous message, here is a copy of the OFCOM webite 'Statement of policy on the persistent misuse of an electronic communications network or service' relating to the...

Misuse of automated calling systems

6.4	Power or predictive diallers offer the possibility of initiating calls to a sequence of numbers in accordance with stored instructions without the need for each individual number to be dialled in turn. They are widely used in call centres. For the purpose of the 2003 Regulations power diallers are more commonly known as automated calling systems with the additional qualification that the calls are made without human intervention. In this context, this means that the contents of the call do not involve an operator or live speech.
6.5	Under the 2003 Regulations it is an offence to use automated calling systems to make direct marketing calls which do not consist of live speech unless the called person has previously notified the caller that for the time being they consent to such communications being sent. An example of such a call is a recorded message for marketing purposes where no operator is present.
6.6	The concept of direct marketing that the 2003 Regulations rely on is very broad and applies not just to the advertisement of goods and services but also to the promotion of an organisation's aims and ideals. It therefore applies to political and charitable, in addition to commercial, organisations. However there may be types of unsolicited recorded messages sent by automated calling systems that cause annoyance or inconvenience but which, for whatever reason, fall outside the 2003 Regulations.
6.7	Under the previous regulatory framework based on the Telecommunications Act 1984 the use of automated calling systems (then described as automatic calling equipment) for purposes other than direct marketing was regulated under a licence condition included in both individual and class telecommunications licences which applied to all communications providers and end-users running a licensed system. The effect of the condition was to prohibit the use of such systems without the consent of called parties to initiate calls that consisted of:
•	recorded messages;
•	silent calls;
•	fax-scanning calls; and
•	fax messages.

and here is the page for the entire document - www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/liberalisation2/responses/bt.pdf

However, as we are all aware these automated calls are now originating from outside UK law - e.g The USA in which cases, OFCOM are directly powerless to prosecute however, I cannot believe that it would be impossible to block calls coming in from confirmed offenders and that this could be done fairly quickly.

I strongly suspect that 'Bernard' and 'Norman' are either employees of the offending organisations or are simply troublemakers...

I get these calls approximately once a week, the last one was this afternoon - 'Financial Debt Awareness' and when I asked, I was told their number was 0203 0260046 as per previous people's comments.

On another similar matter, I contacted OFCOM - sadly they are worse than useless, so don't hold your breath about getting these types of calls stopped.

These guys sorted my debts out. Very good company to deal with. They really do have your best interests at heart. However, they do still call me on a daily basis to check on how I'm getting on. Great customer service but it does get a little annoying.

I have had a call from 01296768580 and promptly hung up. I called it back putting 141 in front and after doing it several times to get an audible voice I discovered it was UK Debt Information Line and yes the voice was Indian! At the end of the recording I was invited to leave my number after the tone to be taken off the list. Being suspicious I didn't. However having seen the comments on this website it is clear they are using another number. I agree with others that it is time this sort of thing was stopped but the problem probably is how?

Random call received from these silly people to a factory switchboard. Nearly 200 people working here, so I dialled 5 to get our number taken off the list. What an offensive person "Ian" at the "UK Debt Information Line" is! He asked whether I understood the call; I explained it was pointless ringing our switchboard and would he take the number off the list. His answer was merely that he knew what number I was ringing from. What a total waste of his time and mine - I do hope his employers monitor complaint threads like this (but I bet they don't).

I just got one of these.. from 0014107748112, are you in debt, press 5... ok, i thought, called up the tpsonline complaints page, waiting to speak to them to get a name, etc. I run an asterisk home pbx which records the calls.. but after 18 mins listening to hold music, itself a breach of the law, I gave up...

Not the first time they've called, but my better half usually answers the phone, and just hangs up on them.

I've just had one as well from UK consolidation. I'm TPS and ex-dir and pressed '5' to ask how they'd got my details - as well as pointing out that what they were doing was illegal the UK. Didn't get very far. The American voice I was speaking to didn't give up any info on who they were, their address etc, instead she simply transferred me to a recording telling me they could suppress my (already suppressed) number. I've only had the one call but I do think I may have a solution - a really ear-piercing diver's whistle! It's designed to attract boats up to two miles away so I figure it should manage to give some sarky US cold caller a bit of a headache. Who knows but as a suppression system, it just might be a lot more effective at getting my number removed! :-)

Hi,

Does anyone know of a company called Search UK? We have been getting calls from them up to 3 times a day for the last 3 weeks or so. They ask for my fiance and if he's not there they start asking me questions 'Have you got a job' 'How many hours' etc. Think they are debt company of some sort but cannot find any info on them. They have now been told repeatedly not to call, but still persist. When I spoke to the guy ('Zane') yesterday he was rude and sarcastic and accused my fiance of lying to him by saying he was not working - which he never told them.

Fed up of them. Waiting for the next call so I can tell them to feck off

Any ideas who/ where/ what they are?

Thanks

Just called the number given on one of the later links (brownbrook) and it seems to be a legit company called Casey and Associates, Will Writers

Have tried to find out the other companies registered there with no luck, as yet.

Hi

Just got a call from the UK Debt Info company.

Fantastic effort from the guy that recorded the message. Priceless!

Reading from above, my experiences are a summation of the above.

I feel quite angry though that some person is going to fall for these numpties gambits. I've read the above in terms of stopping the problem at receipt. What can we do to stop these criminals at source?

I'm in between jobs so quite happy to follow up any suggestions.

cheers

I constantly get these calls, difference is I work in a military headquarters, so it's not just private numbers that get abused by these fumb ducks! I have been told that I cannot register with the TPS because in essence the military phone extension does not exist so it will not be recognised. I have complained to both OFCOM and the Information Commissioner Office and have been told that registering with the TPS would not stop it any how as this is just a list that companies are supposed to abide by and not a physical block.

As a tax payer Come on OFCOM/Info Commissioner do something about these people wasting my time, effort and tax payers money.

As of April 14 they are still at it. I pressed 5 to complain, guy didn't know if they are a Limited Co or plc, someone else told him they were neither. Head office address he gave me was in New Delhi, same as first post. Claimed never to have heard of TPS. I guess if their calls are routed through New Delhi that's how they get round TPC (though my caller ID said 'Withheld' not 'International' but it isn't foolproof.
