UK Debt information line - phone call recorded
February 15, 2008 2:09 pmUPDATE! New call recorded 22/May/2008 (original call below)
By popular request, a shorter slightly less dull version of the above (note that this is still sequentially linear, but the middle section where I’m stringing the bloke along has been chopped out).
I manage to get a little information out of them. And can you believe, apparently people are rude to the advisors…imagine that! I’ll be honest, it gets a bit dull in the middle, but I haven’t edited anything out in case then info is useful to someone. I just had to keep it going. If you get bored, drag the slider to about 11 minutes.
The incoming caller ID was 0012317322143 which is from Michigan in the good old US of A. When they called back, it was from 0800 6943328 which appears to be Financial Services Data Management (F.S.D.M.) based in Swansea.
Apologies for the quality, it was their end not mine.
UPDATE 18/06/2008
I just got a call from 08006943328 - spoke to a Welsh bloke who actually seemed quite nice. He was just qualifying the leads, and I didn’t have time to be put through. But he’s definitely in the wrong job. He seemed quite earnest and genuine…if only he knew the cack he was selling!
The interesting this is that last week I got a call telling me I had received a free cruise to Nassau, Bahamas (all I had to do was pay taxes, charges and get myself to Florida!). I gave them a false name, and they asked me various questions about whether I drove a car, had a credit card, what age I was etc.
So, I can be pretty certain that UK Debt Information Line / FSDM are buying leads from the company that did the “free” cruise.

The original call that started it all…
Fortunately, I was near a PC when I got this automated phone call. It said to press 5 if I wanted to speak to someone about my debt. In the UK, this form of random dialling is illegal, so I thought I’d try to find out a little more. And get some revenge at the same time!
You can hear him trying not to laugh at one point. Altogether a bit odd.
The address he gives is C2/111, West Enclave, Pitampura, New Delhi 11003
There is no UK Debt Information Line I can find on Google.
While I’m here, http://whocallsme.com/ was a great source of info the help me track two other “cold calling” numbers which call, but there is no-one at the other end. 08453723709 - Space Kitchens and 08451309405 - GE Capital Finance.
Both now reported.
Got a call here this afternoon from 01634 386678 was by the phone this time, but got cut off as soon as I answered it.
I phoned OFCOM on 020 7981 3040 who then gave me a reference number. Once you have this number (and only then) you call BT on 0800 731 2762. BT then tell you that there’s nothing illegal in getting 5 calls a day with no-one at the other end. Annoying, but not illegal. However, if you are with BT, they will offer you 3 months free service of Choose to Refuse, which works well. They also suggested calling the TPS, especially if you are registered with them: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
Now, onto the meaty bit - the company name is Cost (UK) Ltd, and here’s what I found:
A petition to wind up Cost (uk) as they promoted a bankrupt company:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb5243/is_200308/ai_n19558394
Cost UK are timeshare scamsters:
http://forum.holidaywatchdog.com/Timeshare-&-Holiday-Clubs-The-Cost-Group-Thread-3456.html
75 silent calls from this number have been reported at Snozwangler so far:
http://www.snozwangler.com/search.php?q=01634386678
They used to have a website, but this is now gone:
http://www.costgroup.com/
They are based in Sevenoaks, Kent. Here are there details:

Forum for this number: http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/01634386678
Does anyone want to grab a mic and, get them back and post a link to the recording here? :)

These berks call most days at around 12.30pm. I’m at work usually but, as luck would have it they rang again at 19.00. I pressed 5 and went through to some witless goit… I asked for their registered company number in the UK and stated immediately that all employees should have immediate access to such information. He told me ‘I just work here’ and I asked to speak to his manager… surprise surprise the phone went dead.
…just reported them to TPS for what it’s worth. Phone number given as 0203 0260046
just reported them to TPS - phone number given as 0203 026 0046
Hi
Im a night shift worker and i recived a call from the morons from uk debt ha bloody ha at about 3 pm. First, what an insalt and secondly once awake i dont go back to sleep again, so reporting these axx holes is a must. I drive for most of the night and if i am woken up i then become a danger to other road users. Am i the only one that gets these cold call continually. when signing up to the phone company i asked not to have cold callers, what can i do to stop them???
I just reported them to TPS too - well done for the recording, it’s surprising he talked for so long.
Can anyone tell me what TPS stands for as I shall inform the next call I get that I will be reporting them. I have several calls a week from this company on my work extension numbers. Very annoying.
TPS is Telephone Preference Service
I received a similar call - with no idea where they got my number - from UK Debt Information with the telephone number 0203 0260046 (same as above). I told them not to call again but the next night we received a call from UK Debt Consolidation. As soon as I started asking questions the woman sarcastically said ‘au revoir’ and hung up - Charming! I am guessing it is the same company though
Been suffering these calls for weeks, even though I am registered with Telephone Preference Service. If yo report them to BT Bt will tell you that dialing 5 is NOT illegal. They suggest registering with Callblocker, (Free) but thise apparently does not block all calls. Otherwise you can contact Silent Call Guard on 0870 4443969 and they will sell you a device to stop all calls. Just one problem it about £70.00. Whoops !
I’ve just filed a complaint with TPS about this bunch of monkeys. It seems they pick up your details from credit card or loan applications submitted within the last 6 years. Mine must have been through Moneysupermarket.com and I have already complained to the Information Commissioners Office about them as despite having checked the box to further contact from them or other companies, within minutes of submitting my details the phone rang from one of them and various companies continued to call me over the next 2 weeks until I managed to get a stop put to it. I would love to hear of this bunch of ‘C U next tuesday’s’ shut down very soon along with moneysupermarket.com.
Why should we have to waste our time hanging on in a queue of 7 previous callers to tell them to stick it up their ample behinds?
Got the same call from them today twice first one at 14:56 so i pressed 5 the first person i spoke to had an american voice and was very abusive to me down the phone when i asked to speek to a supervisor was to to “go to hell and fu@*!ff” i blocked the number on last caller bar but at 17:07 i pressed 5 and pretended to owe £10,000 to 5 diferant companys to see what it was all about.
i was told they could reduce my outgoings and write some of them off blah blah!!, i said i know all about this sort of crap your trying to sell me to which i was told we are not selling anything sir, i then went on to ask how much this service costs me an was told 17% of what i owe to companys (caught out there selling).
i asked for a supervisor and the reply i got was “their all in a meeting would you beleve” to which i replyed “no i dont” i then asked for a number and address for head office he said i wasnt allowed to know where head office is but i can have a number to ring and complain which is 0203 026 0046 to which there is a badly recorded indian message saying their all busy right now but if you want to be removed leave your number
its a scam from start to finish there is no such company on any internet search as UK DEBT INFO this needs stamping out
Caller ID: UNKNOWN
Caller: UK Debt Info
A new lot have joined the bandwagon. It seems they are all using the same recording and companies are paying in to use the system. This time it was called UK Consolidation and the ID was 0014107748094. I tried phoning it back after being put through to an automated removal system (which stated that several companies use the system and I would be removed from them all) to be told that the number is not currently in service. I had Stacey on the phone who sounded a bit American but could well have been Indian.
CallerID 0014107748094
Caller UK Consolidation
I’ve just had a call just like the above, pre-recorded message, press 5 to take advantage of this little known piece of government legislation.
I press 5, american chap comes on, and says “Can you confirm you’re interesting in consolidating your loans?” (I paraphrase). I say no, registered with the TPS yada yada, and he said sorry for the call. I ask to confirm removal of number, he says yes, and hangs up.
Number was withheld.
I just had a call. Hung up when they asked me to press 5, cos I presumed by doing so I’d be charged something, maybe I’m wrong about this. Anyway my question is how can we trace these tossers? I’m not talking about going round with baseball bat and clubbing them to death, just I presume there must be guy in charge of the half wits on the phone. How do we find him or her, surely BT must be able to help…
I got a call from them yesterday, although I’m registered with the tpf, but put the phone down as soon as I realised it was a recorded message. Thanks for this thread - if they phone again I know what to do….
I have just received one of these calls hence searching online to see what I could find out about these individuals. I
just about to use my phone prior to the call so tried to cut the call off once I heard a males boring tones prattling on
debt but couldnt cancel the call. I pressed 5 and got put through to a woman with an English accent called Lauren.
She wasnt ery pleasant and I told her I wasnt happy with the call and asked where she got my number.
She hung up. Something should e done about this. The number was with held.
Had a call today saying they could help me. The only help I needed was for someone to do my ironing. I told the guy that I did not ask for the call and not to ring again. I also told him we were on the TPS but he said it didnt matter
As of April 14 they are still at it. I pressed 5 to complain, guy didn’t know if they are a Limited Co or plc, someone else told him they were neither. Head office address he gave me was in New Delhi, same as first post. Claimed never to have heard of TPS. I guess if their calls are routed through New Delhi that’s how they get round TPC (though my caller ID said ‘Withheld’ not ‘International’ but it isn’t foolproof.
I constantly get these calls, difference is I work in a military headquarters, so it’s not just private numbers that get abused by these fumb ducks! I have been told that I cannot register with the TPS because in essence the military phone extension does not exist so it will not be recognised. I have complained to both OFCOM and the Information Commissioner Office and have been told that registering with the TPS would not stop it any how as this is just a list that companies are supposed to abide by and not a physical block.
As a tax payer Come on OFCOM/Info Commissioner do something about these people wasting my time, effort and tax payers money.
Hi
Just got a call from the UK Debt Info company.
Fantastic effort from the guy that recorded the message. Priceless!
Reading from above, my experiences are a summation of the above.
I feel quite angry though that some person is going to fall for these numpties gambits. I’ve read the above in terms of stopping the problem at receipt. What can we do to stop these criminals at source?
I’m in between jobs so quite happy to follow up any suggestions.
cheers
Just called the number given on one of the later links (brownbrook) and it seems to be a legit company called Casey and Associates, Will Writers
Have tried to find out the other companies registered there with no luck, as yet.
Had one tonight about 7pm (19/4), American girl… after pressing 5, she asked if i had debt, said no, then she asked if any one else in the house did, again said no.. she hung up. I think next time i will follow it through with faulse details, see if i can get some details posted out to me.
Hi,
Does anyone know of a company called Search UK? We have been getting calls from them up to 3 times a day for the last 3 weeks or so. They ask for my fiance and if he’s not there they start asking me questions ‘Have you got a job’ ‘How many hours’ etc. Think they are debt company of some sort but cannot find any info on them. They have now been told repeatedly not to call, but still persist. When I spoke to the guy (’Zane’) yesterday he was rude and sarcastic and accused my fiance of lying to him by saying he was not working - which he never told them.
Fed up of them. Waiting for the next call so I can tell them to feck off
Any ideas who/ where/ what they are?
Thanks
I’ve just had one as well from UK consolidation. I’m TPS and ex-dir and pressed ‘5′ to ask how they’d got my details - as well as pointing out that what they were doing was illegal the UK. Didn’t get very far. The American voice I was speaking to didn’t give up any info on who they were, their address etc, instead she simply transferred me to a recording telling me they could suppress my (already suppressed) number. I’ve only had the one call but I do think I may have a solution - a really ear-piercing diver’s whistle! It’s designed to attract boats up to two miles away so I figure it should manage to give some sarky US cold caller a bit of a headache. Who knows but as a suppression system, it just might be a lot more effective at getting my number removed! :-)
I think this is them:
http://www.totaljobs.com/JobSeeking/job38285189.html
Would explain the Welsh connection…
I just got one of these.. from 0014107748112, are you in debt, press 5… ok, i thought, called up the tpsonline complaints page, waiting to speak to them to get a name, etc. I run an asterisk home pbx which records the calls.. but after 18 mins listening to hold music, itself a breach of the law, I gave up…
Not the first time they’ve called, but my better half usually answers the phone, and just hangs up on them.
Random call received from these silly people to a factory switchboard. Nearly 200 people working here, so I dialled 5 to get our number taken off the list. What an offensive person “Ian” at the “UK Debt Information Line” is! He asked whether I understood the call; I explained it was pointless ringing our switchboard and would he take the number off the list. His answer was merely that he knew what number I was ringing from. What a total waste of his time and mine - I do hope his employers monitor complaint threads like this (but I bet they don’t).
Just got one which apparently came from 07726702957 (a mobile?). I am registered with TPS - whoever this is just committed an offence.
They will be getting reported.
Great Post. I found your articles especially useful and I will return as the content was excellent!
I have had a call from 01296768580 and promptly hung up. I called it back putting 141 in front and after doing it several times to get an audible voice I discovered it was UK Debt Information Line and yes the voice was Indian! At the end of the recording I was invited to leave my number after the tone to be taken off the list. Being suspicious I didn’t. However having seen the comments on this website it is clear they are using another number. I agree with others that it is time this sort of thing was stopped but the problem probably is how?
These guys sorted my debts out. Very good company to deal with. They really do have your best interests at heart. However, they do still call me on a daily basis to check on how I’m getting on. Great customer service but it does get a little annoying.
I agree, these guy’s are true professionals!!! They got me back on track! Can’t thank them enough.
They do however seem to have taken the concept of customer service to another level though!!!!!
Thanks guys.
I strongly suspect that ‘Bernard’ and ‘Norman’ are either employees of the offending organisations or are simply troublemakers…
I get these calls approximately once a week, the last one was this afternoon - ‘Financial Debt Awareness’ and when I asked, I was told their number was 0203 0260046 as per previous people’s comments.
On another similar matter, I contacted OFCOM - sadly they are worse than useless, so don’t hold your breath about getting these types of calls stopped.
Further to my previous message, here is a copy of the OFCOM webite ‘Statement of policy on the persistent misuse of an electronic communications network or service’ relating to the…
Misuse of automated calling systems
6.4 Power or predictive diallers offer the possibility of initiating calls to a sequence of numbers in accordance with stored instructions without the need for each individual number to be dialled in turn. They are widely used in call centres. For the purpose of the 2003 Regulations power diallers are more commonly known as automated calling systems with the additional qualification that the calls are made without human intervention. In this context, this means that the contents of the call do not involve an operator or live speech.
6.5 Under the 2003 Regulations it is an offence to use automated calling systems to make direct marketing calls which do not consist of live speech unless the called person has previously notified the caller that for the time being they consent to such communications being sent. An example of such a call is a recorded message for marketing purposes where no operator is present.
6.6 The concept of direct marketing that the 2003 Regulations rely on is very broad and applies not just to the advertisement of goods and services but also to the promotion of an organisation’s aims and ideals. It therefore applies to political and charitable, in addition to commercial, organisations. However there may be types of unsolicited recorded messages sent by automated calling systems that cause annoyance or inconvenience but which, for whatever reason, fall outside the 2003 Regulations.
6.7 Under the previous regulatory framework based on the Telecommunications Act 1984 the use of automated calling systems (then described as automatic calling equipment) for purposes other than direct marketing was regulated under a licence condition included in both individual and class telecommunications licences which applied to all communications providers and end-users running a licensed system. The effect of the condition was to prohibit the use of such systems without the consent of called parties to initiate calls that consisted of:
• recorded messages;
• silent calls;
• fax-scanning calls; and
• fax messages.
and here is the page for the entire document - http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/liberalisation2/responses/bt.pdf
However, as we are all aware these automated calls are now originating from outside UK law - e.g The USA in which cases, OFCOM are directly powerless to prosecute however, I cannot believe that it would be impossible to block calls coming in from confirmed offenders and that this could be done fairly quickly.
Interesting blog, but this Howard chap must have far too much time on his hands, complete loser, he complains about the above organistion but what’s the bet he’s seriously in debt himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S Does he even have a job I wonder!
XXX
Nathan,
I am happily and profitably employed with no debts whatsoever.
This thread is for people who are constantly being harrassed by unwanted telephone calls and not about personal debt - so I’m not quite sure of the point of your vitriolic personal attack.
My comments are therefore directed at the originators of these calls and the inability of OFCOM to prevent them.
Perhaps you are too illiterate to read the thread or are you also an employee of these sales organisations with their unethical methods ?
How often do you get these calls from this company then Howard?
Peter
Two things, being ‘ex-directory’ means ONLY that.. it does not give any implied right to peace from overseas marketing calls. As for blocking ‘their’ line, sorry but no - you are only blocking yours. The call initiator actually ‘controls’ your line from the time the call is answered until they hang up. Because these messages are automated your line is only held for the period it takes to replay it, then the line is released. If you hang up before, some systems detect this and drop the line immediately, going on to the next number in their list.
I would doubt this is a ’scam’ in the way you mean it - it is called ‘telemarketing’ and has been around for years. Because they are calling from abroad, they can select a target area and start calling numbers from 000001 to 999998, calls that don’t connect don;t cost anything - the system can also detect answering machines, faxes and modems.
Believe it or not, there is actually a market for these call logs, because they retain a value, as they can sell on those numbers that were actually answered by a human, AND those numbers where the recipient responded.

Many years ago I was taught an old trick which works every time – get hold of a whistle, i.e. referee, police etc, the older ones are best as they are louder / higher pitched – then if you get an abusive person or persistent caller on the other end, just blow it into the receiver – it can actually burst ear-drums. If anyone tries to complain about it (only happened once to me) - just say sorry its electrical feedback on the phone – it cannot be proven and unless they reveal who they are nothing can be done!
Amazingly they don’t call back!!
