So much has changed since I started this page years ago, that there are really only a few I know of and can recommend.
In order of personal experience of reliability:
O2 – 10 a month
Orange – ? a month
CBFSMS – varies depending on system load. Sometimes flaky
Free SMS to USA mobiles – unlimited?
Skype SMS – not free, but only 6p to most countries from the UK. Beats 20/30p from the mobile!

UPDATE! While researching the www.sms-txt.co.uk scam, I came across the very comprehensive SMS Text News.
It also has a feed which you can add to your google start page for example.
